"So that same day of Janie's great sorrow she was in jail. And when the doctor told the sheriff and the judge how it was, they all said she must be tried that same day. No need to punish her in jail by waiting. Three hours in jail and then they set the court for her case. The time was short and everything, but sufficient people were there. And all the Negroes for miles around. Who was it didn't know about the love between Tea Cake and Janie?"
This happened after Janie killed Tea Cake. They found her not guilty because it was in self defense. They figured that she shouldn't have to wait in jail because she was going to be found not guilty. They just had to do a trial anyways by law. A lot of peope showed up to the hearing. They all knew that Janie was in love with Tea Cake, so they knew that she wouldn't do that to him intentionally. She was very scared about her sentence. Everyone knows that it was an accident.
